Scan a Scratch-Off Lottery Ticket With a Photo
Applies to: United States. Rules elsewhere differ.
A photo is the fastest way to check a scratch-off or a draw ticket you already hold. This page covers what that photo can tell you, and — just as importantly — what it cannot.
Scratch it, then shoot it
LottoRead reads a scratch-off from its revealed play area, not from an unscratched card or the barcode alone. Scratch the full play area as the ticket instructs before you photograph it; a covered play area has nothing for the camera to read.
What the photo actually tells you
From a clear photo, LottoRead reads:
- The numbers (or the revealed scratch-off symbols) printed on the ticket
- The draw date printed on a draw ticket
For a supported draw game, LottoRead then checks those numbers against the official result it already has on file for that date. It does not look anything up for a scratch-off — there is no draw date or official result to check a scratch-off against.
Where a scan can fail
A read can come back wrong or empty when the photo has:
- Blur from camera shake or a moving hand
- Glare off a glossy ticket surface
- A bent, torn, or otherwise damaged ticket
- An unscratched play area on a scratch-off
Retake the photo flat, in even light, with glare tilted away, and always check the numbers LottoRead detected against the ticket itself before you act on them.
The retailer and the operator have the final say
LottoRead's read and its results check are not a prize determination. Only the retailer's point-of-sale scan or the lottery operator's own validation decides whether a ticket is a winner and pays it out. Always take the physical ticket to a retailer or the operator for validation — a correct read in the app is not a substitute for that, and LottoRead makes no promise that any ticket is or will be a winner.
Supported lottery games
LottoRead's draw-game list changes over time. As of the Millionaire for Life launch on 22 February 2026, Cash4Life and Lucky for Life have held their final draws (21 February 2026) and were replaced by Millionaire for Life. Historical Cash4Life / Lucky for Life results remain on the results pages; they are not live nightly games.
Current major US multi-state examples include Powerball, Mega Millions, Lotto America and Millionaire for Life, plus selected state and international games the app lists. Always use the in-app game list and lottery results for what is live today.

Common questions
Can I scan a scratch-off ticket with a photo?
Scratch off the whole play area first, then photograph the revealed ticket face in good light. LottoRead reads printed numbers from that photo; it cannot read a card that is still covered.
What does LottoRead actually read from the photo?
The numbers and the draw date printed on a clear photo. For a draw-game ticket, LottoRead then checks those numbers against the official result it has on file for that date.
Why did my scan fail or read the wrong numbers?
Blur, glare, a bent or torn ticket, or (for a scratch-off) an unscratched play area can all stop a correct read. Retake the photo flat, in even light, with the play area fully scratched, and check the detected numbers before relying on them.
Does a scan or app check confirm that I won?
No. LottoRead shows what it read and, for draw games, whether those numbers match a result already on file. The retailer and the lottery operator’s official validation decide and pay a prize — always let the retailer scan or validate the physical ticket.
Does scanning improve my odds or promise a win?
No. Scanning does not predict draws, change odds, or promise a win. It only reads a ticket you already hold and compares it with results LottoRead already has.
